ฝ่ายสิทธิ 2 องค์กรสื่อ เรียกร้องให้ปล่อยตัวนักข่าวประชาไทโดยไม่มีการตั้งข้อกล่าวหาโดยเร็ว
นายปราเมศ เหล็กเพ็ชร์ อุปนายกฝ่ายสิทธิเสรีภาพและการปฏิรูปสื่อ สมาคมนักข่าวนักหนังสือพิมพ์แห่งประเทศไทย และนายสุปัน รักเชื้อ อุปนายกฝ่ายสิทธิเสรีภาพ สมาคมนักข่าววิทยุและโทรทัศน์ไทย มีความเห็นตรงกันเกี่ยวกับกรณีที่เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจ สภ.บ้านโป่ง จ.ราชบุรี ควบคุมตัวนายทวีศักดิ์ เกิดโภคาผู้สื่อข่าวประชาไท ระหว่างลงพื้นที่ติดตามการทำข่าวด้วยข้อหากระทำผิด พ.ร.บ.ประชามติ และถูกนำตัวไปฝากขัง ทั้งที่นายทวีศักดิ์ได้แสดงตัวมาตลอดว่าเป็นผู้สื่อข่าว และได้ลงพื้นที่ไปติดตามการทำข่าว แต่ตำรวจกลับมองว่าร่วมกระทำความผิด โดยมีสาเหตุมาจากการนั่งรถมากับกลุ่มประชาธิปไตยใหม่
ทั้งนี้ จากการตรวจสอบข้อมูลเบื้องต้นจากทุกฝ่าย หากยังไม่มีหลักฐานชี้ชัดว่ามีการกระทำความผิดอย่างชัดเจน ขอเรียกร้องให้มีการปล่อยตัวผู้สื่อข่าวประชาไทโดยไม่การตั้งข้อกล่าวหาโดยเร็ว เพราะการอ้างว่านักข่าวนั่งรถไปกับแหล่งข่าวถือเป็นความผิดนั้นจะกระทำไม่ได้ เพราะตามปกตินักข่าวจะต้องลงพื้นที่ทำงานข่าวให้ทันกับเวลา ดังนั้นการเดินทางอาจมีความจำเป็นที่จะอาศัยติดรถแหล่งข่าวลงไปทำข่าวด้วยก็ถือเป็นเรื่องปกติ ขณะที่การปฏิบัติหน้าที่ของผู้สื่อข่าวเองก็เป็นไปตามหลักสิทธิเสรีภาพบนความรับผิดชอบในการนำเสนอข่าวตามที่รัฐธรรมนูญกำหนดไว้
อย่างไรก็ตามในช่วงเปลี่ยนผ่านประชาธิปไตย และสังคมยังคงมีความขัดแย้ง อยากให้คณะรักษาความสงบแห่งชาติ (คสช.) และรัฐบาลคำนึงถึงการสร้างบรรยากาศของการมีสิทธิเสรีภาพในการนำเสนอข้อมูลข่าวสาร เพื่อเป็นการนำไปสู่การตัดสินใจของประชาชนในการลงประชามติ ทั้งนี้ขอให้สื่อมวลชนทุกคนใช้เหตุผลในการนำเสนอข่าวสารให้มากที่สุดเพื่อไม่ให้เป็นการซ้ำเติมวิกฤติความขัดแย้งเพิ่มขึ้น

Vice presidents of the Thai Journalists Association and the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association called on Ratchaburi police to quickly release the Prachatai reporter whom they accused of joining in the political movement.
Bangkok- July 11, 2016: Pramed Lekpetch, vice president of the Thai Journalists Association and Supan Rakchuea, vice president of the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association on Monday called on police officers in Ratchaburi's Banpong district to quickly and unconditionally release Taweesak Kerdphoka, a reporter for online media Prachatai, whom they have detained since Sunday July 10, 2016 because the reporter was in the pickup truck with the New Democracy Movement's activists.
The reporter was covering the news of the group's movement. The police therefore accused him of joining the movement and violating the National Referendum Act, the TJA and the TBJA vice presidents said.
The police officers arrested the activists on grounds that leaflets were found in their pickup truck. They were believed to be campaigning against the national referendum on the draft charter.
Unless there is clear evidence of wrong doing, the Prachatai reporter must be quickly released, the two said. The journalist might not be assumed to have joined the movement just because he was in the same vehicle. Taking a lift provided by a news source may be necessary in some cases. He cannot be assumed failing to work responsibly and accountably according to the rights assured by the Constitution.
During the transitional period to democracy and while conflicts still remain in society, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) should pay attention to and promote freedom of information that will lead to quality decision by the people when voting in the national referendum.
Meanwhile, all the journalists should do their duty responsibly and accountably so that they do not aggravate the rifts in Thai society.
