The Thai Journalists Association (TJA) expresses grave concerns over the arrests on May 9, 2021, of five media broadcasters and trainers belonging to DVB Association in Thailand’s northern region.
The group allegedly crossed the Thai border illegally at San Sai district in Chiang Mai province, fleeing the worsening violence and the persistent crackdown on media personnel in Myanmar.
It is important that the journalists and their companions are given fair treatment without any prejudice in their detention. Their physical safety and health should also be of utmost concern during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
Humanitarian principles and the safety of the five individuals must be put into consideration by the Thai authorities at all stages of the legal proceedings. The Thai Journalists Association will be closely following the case.
Since Myanmar’s civilian government was overthrown in a military coup on Feb. 1, the junta has embarked on a campaign of suppressing media freedom and the work of journalists, as documented widely by the domestic and international press coverage. According to the latest available information, at least 70 journalists have been detained, and a number of news agencies banned from operating by the junta.
As a media organization that values freedom of the press in the ASEAN region and maintains a longstanding relation with Myanmar’s media community, the Thai Journalists Association would like to express our solidarity with media workers in Myanmar and hope to see a peaceful resolution of the crisis in the near future.

แถลงการณ์ กรณีการจับกุมผู้สื่อข่าวเมียนมาในประเทศไทย
สืบเนื่องจากที่สื่อมวลชนได้รายงานข่าวว่า เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจเข้าจับกุมผู้สื่อข่าวชาวเมียนมา 3 คน สังกัดสำนักข่าว Democratic Voice of Burma Association (DVB) พร้อมด้วยผู้ติดตามอีก 2 คน ที่ได้หลบหนีความรุนแรงทางการเมืองเข้ามาพักอาศัยในฝั่งไทยที่อำเภอสันทราย จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เมื่อวันที่ 9 พ.ค. ที่ผ่านมานั้น
สมาคมนักข่าวนักหนังสือพิมพ์แห่งประเทศไทย มีความกังวลใจอย่างยิ่งต่อกรณีการจับกุมดังกล่าว สมาคมฯขอเรียกร้องให้หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องให้การดูแลและปฏิบัติต่อกลุ่มผู้ถูกจับกุมอย่างเป็นธรรม โดยไม่มีการใช้อคติใดๆโดยเฉพาะความปลอดภัยในร่างกายและสุขภาวะในช่วงการระบาดของโรคโควิด-19
นอกจากนี้ สมาคมฯ ขอเรียกร้องให้หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องคำนึงถึงหลักการด้านมนุษยธรรมและสวัสดิภาพของผู้ถูกจับกุมตลอดการพิจารณาดำเนินการทางกฎหมายทุกขั้นตอน
นับตั้งแต่เกิดเหตุการณ์รัฐประหารล้มรัฐบาลที่มาจากการเลือกตั้งในประเทศเมียนมาร์เมื่อวันที่ 1 ก.พ. เป็นต้นมา ทางการเมียนมาเดินหน้าปราบปรามสิทธิเสรีภาพสื่อมวลชนและปิดกั้นการทำงานของนักข่าวอย่างต่อเนื่อง ตามที่ประจักษ์ในรายงานข่าวของสื่อมวลชนเมียนมาและทั่วโลก ข้อมูลล่าสุดระบุว่ามีนักข่าวถูกจับกุมและดำเนินคดีไปแล้วกว่า 70 ราย ขณะที่สำนักข่าวจำนวนหนึ่งก็ถูกคณะรัฐประหารสั่งปิดเช่นกัน
ในฐานะองค์กรวิชาชีพสื่อมวลชนในภูมิภาคอาเซียนที่เล็งเห็นถึงความสำคัญของสิทธิเสรีภาพของสื่อมวลชน และได้ดำรงความสัมพันธ์อันดีกับประชาคมสื่อมวลชนในเมียนมามาช้านาน สมาคมนักข่าวนักหนังสือพิมพ์แห่งประเทศไทย ขอใช้โอกาสนี้ให้กำลังใจเพื่อนพี่น้องสื่อมวลชนชาวเมียนมาให้ผ่านพ้นวิกฤติด้านสิทธิมนุษยชนครั้งนี้ในเร็ววัน และขอยืนยันว่าสมาคมฯจะติดตามความคืบหน้าในกรณีนี้อย่างใกล้ชิดต่อไป
